Day and Night cycle in TD

What if we incorporate a day and night cycle into the tower defense game? During the day, players can build towers and kill monsters as usual. However, at night, towers won't be able to spot monsters, and the monsters can make it to the city unhindered.
To implement this mechanic in a way that is more akin to RPGs than the traditional tower defense games, tower upgrades can be made available to players. To fend off monster attacks at night, one of the tower upgrade paths can include a flashlight. With this upgrade, the towers will be able to spot monsters and destroy them before they reach the city.
